Katy Splash Pads | Summer Activities for Katy Babies

Katy Splash Pads | Summer Activities for Katy Babies

News flash: it’s hot out there, Katy. And while it’s great to get a cool break at free movies, there’s only so much popcorn and sitting in the dark you can take. Summer is for enjoying the outdoors–it’s time to get out there with your little ones! Splash pads offer a fun way to get outside and enjoy the summer without melting into the pavement, and they’re a great place to take babies who just aren’t quite ready for the swimming pool. Plus, older siblings will have a blast getting wet, too! Katy is home to many communities that boast incredible splash pads for their residents, but for families that aren’t in one of these neighborhoods, options may be few and far between. Not to worry: we’ve got you covered with a guide to splash pads in Katy and surrounding areas. Katy Splash Pads: Noah’s Ark: This swim center features a large swimming pool for adults and a small, Noah’s Ark themed pool just for kids. Noah’s Ark was voted Best Pool in Houston on Great Day Houston, and it’s a fun structure with slides, spraying water, animals, and more. Noah’s Ark is southeast of Katy, located near Beltway 8 and Westpark. Admission is $7 per person, but infants under the age of one are free. You can also buy a swim pass for discounted admission. Katy Family YMCA: The YMCA’s splash pad is open to all YMCA members and conveniently located in Katy. Families visiting for swim lessons (membership not required) may also stay after their lessons to enjoy the splash pad. Cullen Park: North of Katy near Saums and Greenhouse, Cullen Park offers one of the best free public splash pads in the Katy area. The splash pad boasts misting flowers, surprise geysers, and other fun water features that will have your little one laughing in the water. Admission is free. McClendon Park: Another Harris County splash park for kids, McClendon Park is located near Westpark and Highway 6. Admission is free. In addition to Katy area splash pads, there are a number of popular splash pad locations in Houston, including: Houston Zoo: McGovern Children’s Playground Discovery Green Tips for Visiting Katy Splash Pads Remember to bring swim diapers. Diapers are required for babies at all splash pads, but just any diaper won’t do: regular diapers may burst or leak, while swim diapers are designed to avoid absorbing all of the water your baby may sit in, and make for a much more enjoyable experience. Visit during the week if possible, when splash pads are less crowded and easier to enjoy. Remember that the sun is the most harsh between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., so if you’re visiting splash pads during these hours, pay close attention to sun and heat safety with lots of sunscreen, hats,...

Hike it Baby: A Great Experience for the Whole Family

Hike it Baby: A Great Experience for the Whole Family

This weekend, we joined the Hike It Baby group for their Hike It Baby Hike On event at Edith L. Moore Nature Sanctuary in Houston. It was fun to get out and have a nice easy hike, and the event was a good excuse to put it on our calendar and quit saying we’d do it “someday.” Someday became today and I’m so glad we went. We will be out hiking again soon! There was a great canopy under the trees, and we were there early enough in the day that we were still comfortable even on this incredibly hot weekend. We enjoyed hiking along Rummel Creek, seeing wildlife, exploring nature, and getting some outdoor exercise as a family. Plus, hiking with the Hike It Baby group, we knew we’d be on a hike that could easily be tackled with a stroller, and our four year old hung in there just fine as well. Hike It Baby hosts hikes throughout the week in the Katy area, and all are welcome to join, so don’t be shy. This is a free activity and a great way to get outdoors, meet other families, and get some exercise! Check out the Hike It Baby listing for more details on currently available...

Free Family Movies in Katy All Summer!

Free Family Movies in Katy All Summer!

It’s summer movie time in Katy! FREE summer movie time! We love movies, and we especially love free activities. So you can bet we take advantage of free movies all summer long! No one is more excited for summer movie season than our family! We’ve been taking our (now three year old) son to movies since he was just a few weeks old, and we are all big movie lovers. In the early days, he (thankfully) slept through it all, but as he’s grown, he’s begun to really enjoy going out to the movies. These days, he happily pops into his seat with a bucket of popcorn and a huge smile on his face, and especially loves animations and superhero movies. It’s a big treat for all of us to go to the movies as a family! (We especially like AMC’s early showings: every movie before noon is just $6!) Of course, movies are even better when they are totally free. Every summer, Katy’s big movie theaters all host free or low-cost showings for families. This summer, Alamo Drafthouse is screening classics like Mary Poppins, Annie, and Space Jam. Santikos and Cinemark are showing recent releases including Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2, Rio 2, and The LEGO Movie. Alamo and Santikos movies are totally free, and Cinemark showings are just $1 per person (or even less if you buy a movie 10-pack). If you haven’t taken your baby to a movie yet, these free showings are a great opportunity to give it a shot! You’ll be in a family friendly environment with plenty of other moms and dads who have been there, and won’t shoot you dirty looks if your baby gets a little fussy. (Of course, if a few whimpers turn into full on wails and disruption, you should step outside to calm your baby down.) Remember to bring extra bottles and pacifiers or be prepared to breastfeed (trust me, no one will notice or care — it’s dark!). Free Summer Movie Details Santikos Summer Movies Dates and Hours: Every Tuesday and Wednesday from June 10th through July 16th, showings at 10 a.m. Cost: Free! Concessions available. Alamo Kids Camp Dates and Hours: Every day from May 30th through August. Showtimes vary, but usually start between 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. Cost: Free!
